Bandits in large numbers have stormed Danmusa town, the seat of Katsina State’s Danmusa Local Government Area, killing nine civilians.

According to a resident of the town who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the gunmen stormed the town at 8 p.m. on Sunday and operated for hours, murdering nine people, including a police officer.

He claimed the bandits also kidnapped an unknown number of individuals and injured several more.

He went on to say that the intruders went home to steal things.

“As I speak to you, there are security agents shooting guns.” That’s what he stated.

Another town source stated that two of the slain victims were his neighbours and that the police officer who was killed during the house-to-house operation was killed once they saw his uniform.

“We are currently preparing their bodies for funerals,” he said, adding that seven other people had also been taken.

Unconfirmed community sources claim that the attackers may be out for revenge after the local government’s recently appointed community watch corps apprehended and killed one of the bandits’ leaders.

“There was a bandit kingpin close to Katsira village who boasted that he would eliminate the new community watch corps. They mobilised and killed him in the process.

“It was a few days ago, and that is why we strongly believe that his boys mobilised to carry out this attack,” he said.

ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the Katsina police spokesman, confirmed last night’s incident and said five people were slain.
