The poor state of hostels at Baze University, a private tertiary institution based in Abuja owned by Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate in the just-concluded 2023 presidential elections, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians on social media.

In a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, by Imran Muhammad, students complained about the poor conditions of the university hostel, including lack of water, electricity, and dirty toilets, after paying over N1 million per room in a year.

The hostel lobby, restrooms, and surrounding area were all in poor condition, as shown in the three-part video that Chronicle NG sighted.

Reacting to the video, Wale Adedayo said, “They should calm down. Datti has used the money for campaign so he’s waiting for refunds.”

Questioning the sincerity of Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, DE TRUTH said, “And the owner of the university is someone who was shouting during the election that he and his principal will fix Nigeria from consumption to production!! Someone that cannot manage a university wants to fix the entire country! What a joke!!.”

Another X user, Saraki, asking the university owner to fix the problem, said, “Ahmad Baba Datti please fix baze first and try again (Nigeria) in 2031 after Baba finished his second term successfully.”

Expressing his vexation at the state of the university hostel, Ali Gwamna said, “How will a students of this university complain about accomadation and other things I think its totally unfair fora student to pay over 1m and still don’t have comparability”

However, Ogodo73, stated that the anger being expressed by Nigerians should be directed at the poor state of public universities.

He said, “This is a private university. Take the crusade to public universities where tax payers are being embezzled year in year out.”

He added, “We cannot grow as a country if we play politics with everything. Yes, it belongs to Datti and yes, Datti have been critical of the Tinubu government.”
