The Federal government has been admonished to ensure prompt payment of Pensioners benefits and consider the plight of the elderly ones who have served the nation meritoriously in their youth.

Giving this charge during a meeting with the leadership of the house of representatives in Abuja, President of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Dr Abel Afolayan urged those at the helm of affairs to come to the rescue of vulnerable pensioners and not fail them like previous administrations which promised much but delivered nothing.

In his response, Speaker of the lower legislative chamber Yakubu Dogara called for calm and understanding from pensioners across the country assuring them that the legislature will take proactive measures to ensure that issues pertaining to delay in payment of pensions become a thing of the past.

He blamed the unfortunate situation on the excessive greed and corruption of those entrusted with public funds adding that with the overwhelming acceptance of the President’s anti corruption campaign, it is no longer business as usual for the cabal.

Similarly the Edo state governor Godwin Obaseki has pledged his administrations readiness and commitment to ensuring a lasting solution to all pension related matters.

Obaseki gave this assurance while addressing members of the state chapter of the National Union of Pensioners who paid him a courtesy visit at the government house in Benin promised that before the year’s end all outstanding allowances due to the retirees would be fully paid.
