No fewer than 10 people have died, and 70 have been hospitalized after strong winds caused four tourist boats to capsize in southwestern China.
On Sunday, sudden strong winds caused the boats to capsize in a river in Guizhou’s Qianxi city, killing 84 people, according to official media.
The death toll rose to ten after the body of one missing individual was discovered on Monday.
The tragedy occurred as China celebrated the tail end of its week-long May Day holiday, a busy season for travel.
Chinese President Xi Jinping had advocated “all-out efforts” in the search and rescue.
According to official media, Xi emphasised the significance of tightening safety procedures in light of previous such accidents.
Authorities in China have also been instructed to increase public safety measures during peak tourist season.
Sunday’s event comes just two months after 11 people were killed in another disaster when a passenger boat collided with an industrial vessel in China’s Hunan province.
Another catastrophe occurred over the weekend in the eastern city of Suzhou when a sightseeing helicopter crashed in a freshly opened park, killing one and wounding four on board.
