The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed the suspension of two correctional officers implicated in a shocking scandal involving a convicted inmate who attempted to process an international passport while in custody.

The revelation, which surfaced through Nigeria Immigration Service’s automated passport system, triggered immediate disciplinary action and sparked widespread concern over internal security procedures.

In a swift response, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), led by Interior Minister Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, suspended the officers linked to the breach. The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, reaffirmed the Service’s zero tolerance for corruption, stressing that any personnel found undermining the system will face dismissal.

“This act runs contrary to our operational rules and cannot be tolerated. The Service stands firm on professionalism, discipline, and the reformative mandate of correctional centres nationwide,” NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar stated.

The incident, however troubling, also highlights the growing efficacy of inter-agency collaboration and digital monitoring reforms in unearthing misconduct.

As the Service doubles down on its commitment to safe custody and inmate rehabilitation, the public is urged to remain confident in the integrity of Nigeria’s correctional system.
