The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has stopped plans by telecommunications provider, Globacom to offer free data to its subscribers on Friday, August 11, 2017.
The commission in a letter jointly signed by its Commissioner for Stakeholder Management Sunday Dare, and its Director, Consumer Affairs, Abdullahi Maikano, on behalf of the Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman, on Tuesday, explained that the promotion was not in line with what was approved by the regulator.
Globacom had announced a “free data day” package for all its prepaid subscribers, whom it said would get free data for one whole day when they meet the voice and/or data usage threshold within seven days.

But the NCC in its letter addressed to the chief executive officer of Globacom Limited, stated, “Please refer to the commission’s letter dated 14th March, 2017 conveying approval for your Glo overload promotion. It has however come to our notice that Globacom Nigeria Ltd has been implementing the above regulatory approval in breach especially given your recent media campaign on the ‘Glo free data offer’, a clear departure from terms and condition of the approval given for the Glo overload promotion
“Consequent upon the above, you are hereby directed to suspend implementation of the Glo overload promotion from your network with immediate effect,” the letter read.
NCC also summoned the Executive Director, Legal Services, of Globacom Nigeria, Gladys Talabi, to a meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja slated for August 17, 2017.
