The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the assault of Corps Member Edema Jennifer by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

In a statement signed by its National Public Relations Officer, Adeyemi Samson, on Tuesday, NANS described the incident as a gross violation of the dignity, safety, and fundamental rights of Miss Edema, who is serving her nation under the NYSC scheme.

The union said, according to information released by the National Youth Service Corps, the operatives “forcefully entered a Corps Lodge under the pretext of investigating alleged unlawful activities, a claim that remains unsubstantiated.”

The union added that Edema, who was visiting the lodge at the time, was “subjected to physical assault by the operatives.”

“This action is not only unjustified but also deeply troubling.

“It represents a dangerous affront to the ideals of national service, rule of law, and human rights,” the statement read in part.

NANS expressed concern over what it called “the increasing tendency of unregulated security outfits to act outside the bounds of legality and accountability”, warning that the development posed a threat to youths across the country.

The student union urged the Anambra State Government and relevant authorities to “investigate this incident thoroughly, ensure that those responsible are held accountable, and take decisive steps to prevent a recurrence.”

“It is imperative that Corps Members across the country feel safe and protected in their places of primary assignment and residence,” it stated.

Declaring solidarity with the assaulted corps member, the union said, “NANS stands with Corps Member Edema Elohor Jennifer and reiterates its unwavering commitment to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian students and youths.

“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.”
