Jose Mourinho is reportedly poised for a dramatic return to Real Madrid, with multiple reports indicating a verbal agreement has been reached for him to take over as head coach.
The Portuguese manager, known globally as “The Special One”, is understood to have agreed an initial two-year contract with the Spanish side, pending the completion of formal documentation and final sign-off.
Football transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano stated on social media platform X that all key terms have been verbally settled between Mourinho and Real Madrid. He added that only official paperwork remains before the appointment is finalised, with the manager expected to travel to Madrid after the club’s final La Liga fixture against Athletic Bilbao.
If completed, the move would mark Mourinho’s second spell in charge of Real Madrid, more than a decade after his first tenure between 2010 and 2013.
During his previous spell at the club, Mourinho guided Real Madrid to the 2011–12 La Liga title with a record 100-point season and lifted the Copa del Rey in 2011. He also led the team to three consecutive UEFA Champions League semi-finals before departing in 2013.
His reported return has generated significant attention, with Real Madrid yet to issue an official confirmation. The club is expected to announce further details once contractual procedures are concluded.
He has since gone on to manage several elite European clubs, maintaining his status as one of football’s most experienced and high-profile coaches.
‘I wanted title’, Mourinho speaks on unbeaten season with Benfica
The Special One, has admitted he prefers winning the title instead of going unbeaten in the season.
Despite not losing a single game, the Portuguese side also failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Mourinho has now said he would have loved to finish the campaign with something to celebrate.
“The unbeatable thing is a great thing,” Mourinho said.
“It’s the first time in my career. Even winning eight championships, I never did it invincible.
“I would change that for the title with two or three defeats, no doubts about that.”
Benfica rounded off the season with a 3-1 win over Estoril, thanks to goals from Richard Ríos, Alexander Bah and Rafa.
