Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami came back from 2-0 down to reach their second final since he joined the MLS side last month.

Messi had two assists in a thrilling US Open Cup semi-final at FC Cincinnati, which ended 3-3 after extra time.

It was the first time the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner failed to score for Miami in his eighth game for the club, but he converted his penalty as they won the shootout 5-4 in Ohio.

Miami also won the League Cup on Saturday, defeating Nashville on penalties.

That was the club’s first major award since its inception as an expansion squad in 2020.

They will now play in the final of the US Open Cup, America’s oldest and most prestigious knockout football competition, which was founded in 1913.

Miami will host the Houston Dynamo on September 27 after defeating Real Salt Lake 3-1 in extra time.

When the MLS season was interrupted in July for the League Cup, Cincinnati was atop the rankings, while Miami was at the bottom.

Miami, on the other hand, is unbeaten in eight games after signing Messi and his former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

With goals from Luciano Acosta and Brandon Vazquez, Cincinnati led 2-0 with 22 minutes remaining before Messi twice crossed for Ecuadorian striker Leonardo Campana to score with headers, the equalizer coming deep into stoppage time.

Josef Martinez put Gerardo Martino’s Miami side ahead early in extra time after an assist from Benjamin Cremaschi, but Yuya Kubo equalized on 114 minutes.

With the shootout tied 4-4, Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender saved Nick Hagglund’s penalty before Cremaschi, 18, converted the game-winning penalty.
