Wayne Rooney believes the forthcoming Premier League match between Manchester City and Arsenal might determine the title’s destination.
Arsenal, who lead the league by six points but have played two more games, will travel to the Etihad Stadium for what Rooney describes as a critical moment in the title fight.
Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show on Sunday, he stated that City has a significant psychological advantage because of their experience and leadership under manager Pep Guardiola.
According to BBC Sport on Monday, Rooney stated, “I think City will have the edge on that, just purely because of the manager and players they’ve got. They will be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players,” Rooney said.
Despite Arsenal’s position at the top, recent losses have put further pressure on Mikel Arteta’s team. City’s 3-0 victory over Chelsea came after Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Bournemouth.
Rooney cautioned that a fall in form may swiftly affect confidence.
“They will be worried because when you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking, ‘Where’s the next goal, the next win going to come from?’” “That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance,” he added.
He also stated that Sunday’s match could have a significant impact on the title outcome.
“Whoever wins will be the favorite to win the league,” said Rooney, adding that a draw “would be a good point” for Arsenal.
Rooney also pushed Arsenal to take a realistic approach, even if it meant sacrificing attacking flair.
“They need to be tough to break down, make sure there are no gaps between the lines, and try to hit them on the break,” he said. “Whether the fans like that type of football or not, they have to do anything to stop City winning.”
“They need to be resilient enough to stop City from scoring,” he added.
With both teams cognizant of the stakes, the Etihad duel is building up to be a title decider—where mentality, discipline, and experience may be just as essential as on-field performance.
