Liverpool are set to sign winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna by activating his 40m euro (£34.5m) release clause.
The 22-year-old is included in Spain’s World Cup team, and his medical examination occurred on Wednesday, with Liverpool dispatching personnel to the United States.
Munoz, who had his international debut in March, is capable of playing on either wing and is anticipated to sign a six-year contract at Anfield. Liverpool will settle the payment in two parts.
Newcastle were in deep negotiations to acquire the forward following their sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, yet Liverpool have triumphed in securing Munoz, who netted seven goals and provided five assists in 36 matches last season.
He will be Liverpool’s initial signing since Andoni Iraola took over from Arne Slot as head coach earlier this month.
While associated with Newcastle, La Liga specialist Phil Minshull referred to Munoz as “one of the gems of Spanish football” who showcases a remarkable work ethic in both offense and defense.
Munoz graduated from Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy and subsequently joined Real Madrid, where he had two short substitute appearances before transferring to Osasuna in July 2025 for 5 million euros.
Madrid kept a 50% sell-on clause and held a matching rights option for Munoz.
They considered bringing him back, but worries about consistent playing time under Jose Mourinho made it impossible for Munoz.
Barcelona expressed interest earlier than their acquisition of Gordon in a deal exceeding £69m.
Last summer, Hugo Ekitike opted for Liverpool instead of Newcastle before Alexander Isak prompted a transfer from Newcastle to Liverpool.
The story of Victor Munoz mirrors this trend, as Liverpool seizes Newcastle’s attempt by activating his release clause with Osasuna.
Interest was also shown by Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen, but in the end, Munoz selected Anfield, with the agreement speeding up after Iraola’s hiring, who has considerable experience in La Liga.
Munoz’s speed, his function in dismantling low defenses, and his proficiency in handling the ball in the attacking zone all contributed to Iraola’s desire to make him the inaugural signing of his time at Anfield.
There is a belief that Munoz’s total performance needs to enhance, but Liverpool is confident this will develop gradually, illustrated by a six-year contract, and they are reassured by having acquired a player capable of finding himself in threatening situations.
His prior experience at Barcelona and Real Madrid reflects his potential.
At the same time, Italy is showing interest in Liverpool striker Federico Chiesa, who desires to have consistent playing time after only starting once in the Premier League last season.
