Leeds defeated Newcastle 4-1 on Monday to move up to third place in the Premier League and hand Magpies manager Matthias Jaissle his first defeat.
Lewis Miley’s own goal set the tone, and Jayden Bogle, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Noah Okafor sealed the victory at Elland Road.
Newcastle had made a good start under Jaissle, despite losing manager Eddie Howe and important players Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Sandro Tonali in the offseason.
Despite being financed by Saudi Arabia’s national wealth fund, Newcastle sought to replace departing players with budding stars but were outclassed by a more experienced Leeds side.
The visitors’ bad night began within the first 20 minutes, when Nico Gonzalez was replaced as a concussion substitute.
That left 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Lewis Miley at the heart of Newcastle’s midfield, with the latter sadly having the final touch after Ao Tanaka’s drive deflected twice before looping into the net.
Leeds extended their lead just two minutes later, and the visitors were unable to recover.
Calvert-Lewin rose highest to meet James Justin’s cross, but his header deflected off Bogle and into the bottom corner, giving the right-back the goal.
Leeds’ number nine did not have to wait long to score his sixth consecutive league goal at Elland Road. Calvert-Lewin stormed past Sven Botman before sliding the ball under Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
Anton Stach should have scored a fourth early in the second quarter when he pounced on a sloppy Hornicek pass out of the pack but skewed the ball just wide.
Okafor made it 4-0 before the hour mark, volleying in from the edge of the box after Newcastle failed to clear a long throw.
Bazoumana Toure scored a late consolation goal to cut Newcastle’s deficit, but the damage had already been done.
Victory puts Daniel Farke’s side on eight points from their first four games, trailing only defending champions Arsenal and Manchester City.
Newcastle remains on five points but has dropped to 12th due to a negative goal difference.
