The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 235 vehicles for a range of offences including indiscriminate parking, environmental violations, and general traffic misconduct across the state.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the agency’s spokesman, Adebayo Tofiq, the enforcement was part of a clean-up campaign targeting major traffic corridors in Lagos.

“This expansive operation, meticulously coordinated under the leadership of Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, commenced today with full deployment across high-density zones, notably Oyingbo, Iddo, Eja-Lonibu, Adeniji Adele, Sabo, Jibowu (Inter-State Terminal), and Oshodi,” the statement read.

The vehicles impounded include 38 private cars, 156 commercial Volkswagen buses (Danfo), 19 minibuses and tricycles (Korope), five haulage trucks, and 17 inter-state buses. The violations, LASTMA said, were in breach of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

“The offences ranged from unlawful encroachment upon pedestrian pathways, obstruction of vehicular flow, establishment of illegal terminals, to reckless disregard for established traffic regulations,” the agency noted.

Tofiq highlighted a particularly serious incident during the enforcement, “In one particularly egregious episode, five articulated trucks were intercepted atop the Adeniji Adele Bridge while illicitly offloading livestock—including rams, cows, and abattoir waste—thus constituting a grave environmental defilement and compromising both public safety and the structural integrity of the bridge.
The drivers, in manifest contempt for sanitation laws, are now subject to imminent judicial proceedings,” he added.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized that the exercise is part of a broader initiative by the Lagos State Government to revamp the urban environment.

The agency said it will continue its enforcement drive to ensure Lagos roads are safe, accessible, and compliant with transport laws.
