The Lagos State Government has stepped up enforcement of structural integrity checks in public schools following the discovery of unsafe buildings across the state.

The move comes as authorities begin the demolition of distressed structures at Mainland Senior High School in Fadeyi, located within Yaba Local Council Development Area.

Chairman of the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), Hakeem Smith, said the action followed detailed structural integrity assessments, which revealed serious safety risks.

According to him, a building initially marked for renovation had earlier been classified for demolition but was left standing. Fresh tests confirmed that the structure—and another nearby block—posed a danger to students and staff.

Two buildings are currently being demolished, while a third will undergo rehabilitation to meet safety standards.

Affected students have been temporarily relocated to nearby schools to ensure learning continues without disruption. Authorities say new classroom blocks will be constructed, with completion expected within nine months after approvals.

Smith stressed that all future school construction would comply with international safety standards, including soil testing and proper structural design.

Meanwhile, the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) said it played a key role by alerting authorities to the dangers.

Yaba Cell Coordinator, Adebayo Ogunrinde, noted that the group is working to prevent building failures through early detection and reporting.

“We don’t want to wait for a collapse before acting. Prevention is our priority,” he said.

Traditional ruler, Oba Adeyemi Adeniyi, welcomed the demolition, describing the abandoned structures as a long-standing safety concern in the community.
