The executive Governor of Taraba State, Gov. Agbu Kefas, declared free education in all the state’s government primary and secondary institutions beginning with the next academic session.

According to him, this was done to mitigate the effects of the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly called gasoline.

Kefas stated this on Friday while on an assessment tour of primary and secondary schools in Wukari, his home town.

Kefas made the announcement while on an inspection visit to primary and secondary schools in his hometown of Wukari.

According to him, primary and secondary education in Taraba would be free beginning with the next academic session.

It will be remembered that Kefas recently proclaimed a state of emergency in basic and secondary education, slashing Taraba University’s and the College of Nursing and Midwifery’s school fees by 50%.

“Let me announce to you that by the next academic session, the state government will take responsibility for the school fees, and all of you will attend school free of charge.

“We will continue to support you to have access to qualitative education for the brighter future of our state,” he said.

Mr. Daniel Nuhu, a Zonal Director of Education, praised Gov. Kefas for taking the time to personally examine the state’s public schools.

Nuhu stated that free education and the restoration of primary and secondary schools would go a long way toward improving the fortunes of the state’s less privileged citizens by providing them with equitable access to quality education.
