The Kano State Censorship Board has declared that “after-party” and “hot challenge” activities at wedding ceremonies and other social gatherings hosted at event centers throughout the state will be immediately suspended.
The suspension was announced by the board’s executive secretary, Abba El-Mustapha, in a statement released on Saturday by Abdullahi Sulaiman, the public relations officer.
The statement claims that the action is a component of the board’s continuous efforts to guarantee adherence to rules controlling the operations of event centers and masters of ceremonies throughout the state.
“The attention of the board has been drawn to the growing trend of this activity, which is considered a Western cultural practice increasingly introduced into wedding celebrations in the state.
“Consequently, the board has suspended the practice in order to safeguard the cultural, moral, and religious values of the people of Kano State,” the statement said.
The statement claims that the board’s responsibility to sanitize entertainment activities and guarantee that public events be held in conformity with the state’s cultural and religious values also made the decision essential.
The statement emphasized that, as long as the entertainment promotes morality, respects local culture, and adheres to religious principles, the board is open to positive and responsible kinds of entertainment at weddings and other social events.
It stated that, when carried out in accordance with acceptable ethical norms, entertainment continues to be a significant component of ceremonies.
The board also warned that any person or organization found to be in violation of the suspension may face appropriate legal sanctions in accordance with the laws enforced by the board and instructed all event centers, MCs, event planners, and other stakeholders involved in organizing social events to fully comply with the directive.
The state’s citizens were also urged to assist the board by reporting any event center or MC that was discovered to be participating in or endorsing the prohibited acts.
It stated that these reports were to be made as soon as possible and had to be about incidences that happened in Kano State.
