Bayern Munich took control of their UEFA Champions League knockout play-off with a 2-1 victory over Celtic at Celtic Park, handing the Scottish side their first home defeat in over a year.

Celtic, playing their first UCL knockout tie in 12 years, made a dream start when Nicolas Kühn blasted a left-footed strike past Manuel Neuer just 25 seconds into the match. However, their joy was short-lived as Adam Idah was ruled to have obstructed Neuer’s vision, leading to the goal being disallowed.

Despite a strong defensive showing from the hosts, Bayern gradually imposed themselves. Michael Olise and Harry Kane both tested Kasper Schmeichel before Olise finally broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime. The former Crystal Palace winger cut inside and unleashed a stunning left-footed shot beyond Schmeichel, silencing the home crowd.

Just minutes after the restart, Kane doubled Bayern’s lead with a clinical finish from inside the six-yard box, marking his 29th goal of the season.

Celtic pushed for a response and thought they had a penalty when Dayot Upamecano’s challenge on Arne Engels was reviewed by VAR, but the referee deemed it a fair tackle.

Daizen Maeda gave Celtic hope in the 80th minute, heading home from close range after Bayern failed to clear an Engels corner.

The Scottish champions pressed for an equalizer, with Alistair Johnston forcing a late save from Neuer, but Vincent Kompany’s side held firm to take a narrow advantage into the second leg.

Bayern now boast five consecutive wins across all competitions, while Celtic will need a historic result in Munich to keep their European dreams alive.
