Harry Kane scored a fantastic goal in his comeback from injury as Bayern Munich won the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
Kane, who was seen by England head coach Thomas Tuchel, returned to action after missing the international friendly against Japan and Bayern’s Bundesliga victory over Freiburg due to a minor injury.
The 32-year-old England captain was subdued in the first half, but he was involved in the buildup when former Liverpool forward Luis Diaz gave Bayern a well-deserved lead with a controlled finish four minutes before halftime.
Kane then demonstrated his class moments later with a brilliant right-foot strike into the bottom corner that left Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin with little chance.
Manuel Neuer, Bayern’s goalkeeper, produced four excellent saves, three of which came from Kylian Mbappe, but Vincent Kompany’s side could have scored more in a frantic match.
In desperation and with unrest sweeping the stadium, Real Madrid brought on Jude Bellingham after an hour as they attempted to launch a comeback—and the midfielder made an amazing cameo.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had appeared uncomfortable in defense, demonstrated the other side of his game with a brilliant low cross that Mbappe converted after 74 minutes.
Real continued to press, but Bayern held firm, taking a slender lead to Munich for the second leg.
Real Madrid return to La Liga action and host Girona on Friday evening, while Bayern Munich play on Saturday in the Bundesliga when they travel to St. Pauli.
