Harry Kane scored twice and missed a penalty as 10-man Bayern Munich secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a comfortable victory over Union Saint-Gilloise (USG).

The result leaves Vincent Kompany’s side second in the table on 18 points from their seven games.

Bayern are now three points behind leaders Arsenal and five points clear of Barcelona, who head a quartet of clubs just outside the top eight automatic positions.

Belgian champions Union sit 31st on six points, two adrift of a place in the top 24 and a spot in the play-offs, with a fixture against Serie A side Atalanta to come next week.

David Hubert’s team had produced a resolute display until Kane broke their resistance early in the second half, heading in from Michael Olise’s corner.

The England striker won and converted a penalty to add Bayern’s second within three minutes as he registered his 35th goal in 29 appearances in all competitions.

While Kim Min-jae was dimissed just after the hour mark for the hosts for collecting a second yellow card, Union were unable to use their numerical advantage to get back into the contest.

Instead Bayern looked more likely to add a third goal, with Kane striking the bar from a second penalty and Olise blazing over from six yards out.

“I tried to whip it fast into that far corner and just put a bit too much on it,” Kane said of his penalty miss.

“I’m always learning. People just expect me to score penalties but that’s why I practise. I’ll probably learn more from that miss than the 10 I’ve scored this season already.”

Bayern are now unbeaten in their last 38 home games in the Champions League group stage/league phase, with their last defeat coming against Manchester City in December 2013.

The Bavarian club has also lost just one game this season, when they travelled to face the Gunners in November.

“It feels great to be honest, to be at a club like this, but also the team we have and the way we work,” added Kane.

“Seeing it first hand, the way we train every day, the way the staff put in the hours behind the scenes. We’re all just one big unit. We’re pulling in the right direction.”
