The Kaduna State Government has issued an urgent public health advisory following a rise in diphtheria cases among children across the state, urging parents and caregivers to ensure their children receive routine vaccinations.

The warning was issued by the Kaduna State Ministry of Health after health authorities recorded an increase in confirmed infections, particularly among children who have not completed their immunisation schedules.

The ministry described diphtheria as a highly contagious bacterial infection that primarily affects the throat and nose. If left untreated, it can cause severe breathing difficulties, heart complications and even death.

Health officials stressed that vaccination remains the most effective protection against the disease. Parents were advised to take children who have missed any routine immunisation doses to the nearest health facility without delay.

The government also urged residents to seek immediate medical attention if a child develops symptoms such as sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, difficulty breathing or a thick grey coating in the throat.

In addition to vaccination, residents were encouraged to maintain good hygiene, avoid close contact with infected persons and promptly report suspected cases to health authorities.

The Kaduna State Ministry of Health said it is working closely with partners to strengthen disease surveillance, improve case management and increase public awareness to contain the outbreak.

The government appealed to residents to remain calm while cooperating with health workers to prevent further spread of the infection.
