A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki has announced former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The decision was ratified on Saturday during a special national convention held at the party’s office in Area 10, Garki District, Abuja. Jonathan was not present at the event, but his certificate of return was received on his behalf by Fred Agbedi, a member of the House of Representatives from Bayelsa State.
The convention had initially been scheduled for the A-Class Park and Event Centre, but plans changed after the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) issued a directive instructing owners of hotels and event centres to engage only with leadership structures of political parties recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The PDP faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is the group recognised by the electoral body.
Earlier on Saturday, police officers blocked access roads leading to the planned venue, forcing organisers to relocate the convention to another location within Area 10, where proceedings continued.
Party officials later informed journalists that a date for the formal presentation of the party’s flag to Jonathan would be announced subsequently.
