Prof. Attahiru Jega, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, has been appointed as the leader of the Carter Centre’s international election observation team in Zimbabwe.
Following an invitation from Zimbabwean authorities and accreditation of its observers by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, the Carter Centre commenced its mission in late July.
According to a statement from the Director of its Democracy Programme, David Carroll, Jega accepted the offer.
“It’s an honour to lead the centre’s mission to observe Zimbabwe’s August 23 harmonised elections. I urge all Zimbabweans, including political party members, candidates, and voters, to show their commitment to democracy and peaceful elections,” Jega said.
In the first week of August, fifteen long-term observers came to Zimbabwe and were stationed throughout the country.
Short-term observers will arrive on August 18 and will be dispersed across the country on election day to monitor polling, counting, and tabulation.
