An analysis of data on admissions for the 2022–2023 admission session in Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and other higher institutions of learning revealed that 88 institutions admitted students outside of JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System, also known as CAPS.
Admissions made outside of CAPS are considered illegal, null, and invalid by JAMB.
In 2017, JAMB introduced the Central Admissions Processing System, which allows all tertiary institutions to upload the admission status of individuals awarded admission.
CAPS has consolidated and automated admissions processes between individuals and their preferred tertiary institutions.
In 2020, JAMB advised universities to discontinue admitting candidates through their own portals.
The board referred to the activity as a gross exploitation of the computerised Central Admissions Processing System.
In April 2024, the board stated that it would no longer tolerate unlawful admissions made outside of the CAPS.
The board issued a message warning candidates not to accept admission offers from colleges without first going through the process.
JAMB reiterated in a statement titled ‘Cessation of illegal/irregular admission’ that all applications for admission to first degrees, national diplomas, national innovation diplomas, and the Nigeria Certificate in Education into full-time, distance learning, part-time, outreach, sandwich, and other programmes must be processed exclusively through JAMB.
In a report titled ‘Compiled assessment of institutions on compliance with the 2022/2023 admission guidelines’, the board stated that institutions that fully complied with admission guidelines received 10 points, those with partial compliance received five points, and those that did not comply received zero points.
Our correspondent discovered that 88 universities did not comply with the clause in CAPS that governs full admissions.
Some of the institutions are the University of Uyo, University of Abuja, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Yaba College of Technology, Plateau State University, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Coal City University, Crawford University, Crescent University, Ebonyi State University, Rhema University, Borno State University, Chrisland University, Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Alvan Ikoku College of Education, and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu University.
