In a decisive move to usher in a new era of leadership, the Ijaw diaspora council (IDC) has named Professor Nimi Wariboko as its new President Worldwide, following the conclusion of an intensive global search by the Presidential search and appointment committee.

The committee, originally comprising 12 distinguished members and later reduced to 10, worked under tight deadlines after the dissolution of the current IDC Executive Council was announced to take effect from 24 May 2025. Despite initial concerns over a potential leadership vacuum, the committee was met with overwhelming interest: three exceptional candidates vied for the presidency, while eight strong contenders applied for regional vice-presidencies.

Applying a rigorous corporate assessment method to score candidates fairly, the committee emerged with a result that it hailed as “fate and chance conspiring in our favour.”

The newly appointed Ijaw Diaspora Council (IDC) leadership is as follows:

Professor Nimi Wariboko – President Worldwide

Chief (Amb) Dr Regina Yaboh – Vice President, America

Mr Suoton Dambo – Vice President, Australia and the Pacific

    • Rivers Crisis: Ijaw groups threaten violence against impeachment of Fubara

Dr Bene Ekine-Afolabi – Vice President, Europe

Dr Preye Buowari – Vice President, Africa

Committee Chair MacDonald I J Mopho expressed optimism: “We believe these new leaders will elevate IDC’s mission globally and at home in Nigeria.” The announcement has been met with congratulations and hope across the global Ijaw community.

As the Ijaw diaspora council looks to the future, the message is clear: leadership renewal has begun with strength, transparency, and vision.

May God arise for the restoration and prosperity of Ijaw nation.
