Olatunji Disu, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has directed officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to desist from unauthorised social media activities capable of undermining the integrity and professionalism of the force.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Anietie Edem, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), said the directive followed concerns over the growing trend of police personnel creating videos, conducting live sessions, and engaging in other social media activities while in uniform without official authorisation.
Edem said serving officers are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content while in police uniform, commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police officers for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial gain.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, PSC(+), NPM, has directed all officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to desist from unauthorised social media activities capable of undermining the integrity, professionalism, and public image of the Force,” the statement reads.
Edem said the IGP noted that although social media remains an important tool for communication and public engagement, its use by serving officers must be guided by existing laws, regulations, and the police social media policy.
According to him, Disu directed commissioners of police, heads of departments, commanders, and other supervisory officers to sensitise personnel under their commands and ensure strict compliance with the directive.
He also directed the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) to strengthen monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers engaged in activities inconsistent with the professional standards of the force.
Disu said supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to take action against erring personnel within their commands.
