About 10 people have been confirmed dead and seven others injured after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated along the Bagega–Anka road in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The explosion occurred around 6:15pm on Monday when a Volkswagen Golf 3 wagon conveying passengers from Bagega to Anka reportedly ran over an explosive device allegedly planted by suspected bandits operating in the area.
The state police spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, told journalists that an initial count recorded one death and seven injuries after security operatives were first deployed to the scene for assessment.
However, according to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, police later confirmed that nine additional bodies were recovered during continued search and rescue operations, bringing the total death toll to 10.
The explosion reportedly took place between Tungar Kudaku and Bagega communities, triggering an immediate response from tactical police teams deployed to secure the area and recover victims.
The bodies were evacuated to a hospital for autopsy and later released to families for burial in line with Islamic rites, while the injured are receiving treatment.
Security authorities say measures have been reinforced along the Anka–Bagega corridor, with increased patrols aimed at preventing further attacks and improving road safety.
Residents have been urged to remain alert and report suspicious activity or objects to security agencies as investigations continue.
