The House of Representatives on Thursday passed the executive bill to form state police, taking a big step toward decentralizing Nigeria’s policing system.
The measure was adopted during the plenary when the House retracted its prior constitutional amendment proposal on the establishment of state police, preferring to support the executive measure.
The passage comes after the Nigerian Senate approved its version of the legislation, putting the country closer to implementing a dual policing system aimed at enhancing internal security and increasing law enforcement at the state level.
