President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep concern over the recent flooding that has devastated parts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

The flooding, described as the worst in recent decades, has displaced thousands of residents and severely impacted key facilities, including the Maiduguri Post Office and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his “heartfelt condolences” to the government and people of Borno State, particularly those who have lost their means of livelihood.

The flood, caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam, has wreaked havoc on communities across the state.

“While relevant authorities are still assessing the damage wrought by the flood, I call for the immediate evacuation of people from affected areas,” the President said.

Tinubu reassured Governor Babagana Umara Zulum and the people of Borno State that the Federal Government stands ready to offer full support to address the immediate needs of those displaced and affected by the disaster.

“The Federal Government is committed to mobilizing all necessary resources to support the state during this difficult time,” the President pledged.

In line with this, Tinubu has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to expedite efforts to assist flood victims. The agency is expected to work closely with state authorities to provide relief materials and coordinate the evacuation of affected residents.

President Tinubu’s response comes amid widespread concern over the long-term effects of the disaster on local infrastructure and the wellbeing of residents in the affected areas.

As officials continue to assess the full extent of the damage, the President’s reassurance of federal support offers some comfort to those grappling with the flood’s impact.
