Serhou Guirassy’s first-half double secured Borussia Dortmund a 2-1 victory over Monterrey, booking their place in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals where they will face five-time champions Real Madrid on Saturday in New York.

Making their Club World Cup debut, Dortmund came into the match unbeaten in 10 games (W8, D2), and that momentum was evident early on at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The German side wasted no time asserting dominance in their first-ever meeting with a Liga MX team.

The opening goal came in the 14th minute, with Guirassy finishing confidently in a one-on-one situation after receiving a sublime back-heel assist from Karim Adeyemi. It was a moment of real class that typified Dortmund’s bright start.

Monterrey responded with intent, nearly equalizing immediately when Jesus Corona’s angled shot clipped the outside of the post. Nelson Deossa also tested Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel with a powerful drive.

Dortmund, however, regained control. Ten minutes after his first, Guirassy struck again—again assisted by Adeyemi—tucking his shot neatly into the corner of the net. The Guinean striker nearly completed his hat-trick before halftime, narrowly missing Jobe Bellingham’s cross.

Monterrey emerged from the break revitalized. Just three minutes into the second half, German Berterame scored his third of the tournament, heading home from close range to cut Dortmund’s lead.

Monterrey’s momentum grew, with Kobel called into action again to deny Corona from close range. Berterame thought he had netted a brace, but his goal was ruled out for a marginal offside.

Despite late pressure and a triple substitution that introduced Lucas Ocampos and Roberto de la Rosa, Monterrey couldn’t find the equalizer. Dortmund held firm in a nervy second half to seal a narrow win and a ticket to Saturday’s marquee matchup.

“A potential bite of the Big Apple proved too much for Monterrey in the end,” the report stated, adding that the Mexican side’s gallant exit followed an unbeaten group-stage run (W1, D2).
