Fulham and the Premier League have strongly denounced the racist and homophobic abuse targeted at defender Calvin Bassey following his performance in Sunday’s FA Cup match against Manchester United.

The Nigeria international opened the scoring for Fulham before half-time at Old Trafford, where the game ended 1-1 in regular time. Fulham later triumphed on penalties, securing their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

In a statement released on Monday, Fulham expressed their outrage at the abuse Bassey faced on social media.

“Fulham Football Club is utterly appalled at the racist and homophobic abuse received and subsequently shared by Calvin Bassey on social media after yesterday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United,” the club stated.

“We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.”

The club further emphasized that they are collaborating with relevant authorities to identify those responsible and ensure they face appropriate consequences.

The Premier League also issued a statement reinforcing its stance against discrimination.

“We will offer our full support to Calvin and the club. We work with social media companies and authorities to help ensure any individuals found guilty of discrimination face the strongest possible consequences.”

Instances of racial abuse in football have been on the rise. In December, Manchester City’s Kyle Walker was subjected to online racist attacks following his team’s Champions League defeat to Juventus.

Last month, City forward Khadija Shaw missed a match for mental health reasons after experiencing racist abuse following a Women’s Super League loss to Arsenal.

Reaffirming their commitment to inclusivity, Fulham stated, “Fulham Football Club is committed to maintaining a firm stance against all forms of discrimination and remains dedicated to fostering an environment of respect and inclusion.”

Fulham is set to face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup quarter-finals on March 29.
