At least two people have died and dozens rendered homeless following a devastating flood that hit Gumsuri and Wovi communities in Damboa Local Government Area, Borno State.
The incident occurred on Sunday after a relentless downpour that lasted between 12 to 13 hours, causing severe flooding that ravaged the communities.
Preliminary assessments revealed that nearly half of all residential buildings in the affected areas were either heavily damaged or completely submerged. Many families were forced to flee their homes, seeking refuge on higher ground and salvaging whatever belongings they could.
Describing the situation as dire, residents appealed to the government, humanitarian agencies, and well-meaning individuals for urgent support, including temporary shelter, food, and medical assistance.
“We are overwhelmed,” said a community elder in Gumsuri.
“Many have lost everything. We fear more bodies may be found as search efforts continue,” he added.
Emergency response teams, according to Zagazola Makama, are currently on the ground assessing the scale of the destruction and working to confirm the number of casualties.
