Abdulganiyu Jaji, the controller-general of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), says there is an urgent need to review safety protocols governing the transportation of petrol across the country.

Jaji spoke in Abuja on Saturday while reacting to the tanker explosion that claimed over 50 lives at Dikko junction in the Gurara LGA of Niger state.

He also said petrol marketers should caution their tanker drivers against reckless driving on highways.

There has been an increase in cases of petrol tanker explosions across the country, raising concern about the safety procedures related to conveying the flammable product.

He decried the rising frequency of tanker and fuel station explosions, warning that a small static spark or gas leak can cause a deadly fire incident.

Jaji warned Nigerians against scooping petrol from fallen tankers, noting that it is a “highly fatal risk”.

“Petrol vapour and leaks can ignite at any moment. Your life is worth more than a few litres of fuel,” he said.

The fire service boss urged Nigerians to avoid accident sites and report any flammable leak to the service for prompt intervention.

He commiserated with the families of the victims of the explosion while commending the first responders for their dedication and resilience.

Jaji reiterated the service’s commitment to enhancing safety awareness and called for the swift passage of the Fire Service Act currently under review in the national assembly, noting that the outdated law is inadequate to address current fire safety challenges in the country.

“Every life is precious, and we must do everything in our power to protect our citizens,” he added.

On September 8, 2024, 30 persons were killed after a petrol tanker exploded at the Dendo community in the Agaie LGA of the state.
