A fire broke out at one of the committee conference rooms in the National Assembly Complex on Friday.

The fire incident occurred at Room 322 in the New Building wing of the House of Representatives section of the building.

The wing houses the offices of the lawmakers, committee rooms, banks and other private businesses.

Office of the Speaker is on the fourth floor.

It was learnt that the fire broke out on Friday evening, after the close of work when most of the lawmakers, workers and guests had left the premises.

Security personnel in the building were said to have put out the fire, preventing it from spreading to other rooms and floors on the wing.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained as of the time this report was filed.

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Benjamin Kalu, could not be reached to speak on the incident. The lawmaker did not pick calls made to his telephone line, which indicated that it had been roamed. The spokesman was said to have been out of the country since the National Assembly began the annual two-month recess.

When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer, National Assembly Division of the Nigeria Police, DSP Abdullahi Sambo, said he was not aware of the fire outbreak.

The DPO, who was one of those injured by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria when they attacked the National Assembly in July, said he was still on leave.
