The 2025 Felabration festival, marking the 25th anniversary, has officially begun with a week-long celebration of the life, music, and radical spirit of the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
This year’s theme ‘Shakara’ channels the confidence, rebellion, and creative fire that defined Fela’s enduring legacy.
The week of events, running from October 13 to 19, launched with a debate at NECA Hall in Ikeja.
Moderated by former senator Ben Murray-Bruce, the debate was themed ‘Water No Get Enemy’, one of Fela’s most poignant songs.
The conversation delved into the critical intersection of art, governance, and sustainability, exploring how these forces can collaborate to build a more equitable Africa.
The panel featured key voices including Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos state commissioner; Ekuma Eze, Rite Foods’ head of corporate affairs; and Festus Okubor.
This followed a series of vibrant pre-events that had already energised the city, including a fashion competition, school debates, art exhibitions, and colourful street parades that brought Fela’s vibrant aesthetic to life.
The heart of the celebration now moves to its traditional homes, the New Afrika Shrine and Freedom Park, for a lineup of concerts, workshops, and cultural showcases.
The stage is set to be electrified by performances from Fela’s musical heirs — Femi Kuti and Made Kuti — alongside other acclaimed artistes like Terry Apala, Kashcoming, Berri Tiga, Centinno, and Boysarm Parody.
The celebration will also extend beyond Lagos, with events scheduled at Ibadan’s Liberty Stadium on October 15.
Speaking with Eyes of a Lagos Boy, Yeni Kuti, Fela’s daughter and the founder of Felabration, expressed joy and gratitude as the festival reaches the historic milestone.
“It’s incredible to see Felabration turn 25 and it just keeps getting better every year! We’re here to celebrate Fela, his music, and his message with joy and gratitude,” she said.
“I hope that the next 25 years will be even more festive and inspiring. I’m 64 now, so by the time we’re celebrating 50 years of Felabration, I’ll be 89 and I plan to still be dancing.”
