The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ajao Adewale, has issued a strong warning to residents and officers alike, cautioning against bribery and the illegal detention of suspects.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the CP stressed that it is a criminal offence for citizens to offer bribes to officers, as stipulated under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act.

“Bail is free, and any officer found collecting money for bail or documentation will face strict disciplinary action,” the CP declared.

CP Adewale directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Departmental Heads to immediately release suspects being detained for minor, bailable offences. He emphasized that the constitutional rights of citizens must not be violated under any circumstance.

“Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Departments are to immediately review and release suspects held for minor, bailable offences once due processes such as documentation and surety verification are completed,” he instructed.

Adewale also condemned the involvement of officers in civil matters, particularly land disputes, and warned that such interference falls outside the jurisdiction of the Nigeria Police Force.

“Also, police must not intervene in civil matters, particularly land-related disputes, which lie outside their jurisdiction. Any officer in violation, and supervisors who fail to enforce this directive, will be held accountable,” he stated.

He criticized the increasing reports of officers demanding payments before investigating cases, branding such actions as extortion and abuse of office.

Adewale cautioned the public against offering bribes or attempting to use the police for personal matters such as debt recovery or private grievances.

“‎Members of the public are also cautioned against offering bribes, as this is a criminal offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act. Citizens are advised not to misuse the Police for debt recovery or personal vendettas,” he warned.

The CP called on FCT residents to support the command’s efforts to uphold professionalism, human rights, and accountability, urging them to report any misconduct to the Complaint Response Unit via 08107314192.
