The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, correcting an earlier advisory that reported a fire incident.
FAAN had initially announced that a section of the terminal had been engulfed by fire, stating that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) had responded promptly and that no casualties or loss of life were recorded.
However, in an updated statement, the authority said preliminary investigations showed that the incident was not caused by a fire.
According to FAAN, the smoke seen inside the affected area was caused by the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system, not by flames.
The authority said the reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is still under investigation.
FAAN added that normal operations have resumed at Terminal 2 while officials continue to determine the exact cause of the incident.
The agency thanked passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the safety and security of airport operations.
The incident comes about five months after a fire outbreak affected Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on February 23.
