The Enugu Electrical Distribution Company (EEDC) has voiced worry about ongoing vandalism to electrical installations in Abakaliki.

According to a statement published on Sunday by EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezehon, the loss of electricity in Abakaliki was caused by vandalism to the Udemezue 11KV Feeder in the early hours of the day.

Ezeh identified affected locations as Oroko-onuoha, Udensi, Kpirikpiri, Ogbaga Road, New Layout, Udemezue, Low-Cost Housing Estate, and Hilltop Road, among others.

According to him, famous enterprises such as Amikaba, Siren Hotel, Man City Hotel, Muchels Hotel, De Pablo Hotel, and Unity FM radio station have all been affected.

“We wish to inform our esteemed customers in the Abakaliki metropolis that the current loss of power supply being experienced is due to the vandalisation of the Udemezue 11KV Feeder in the early hours of today, Jan 5,” he said.

Ezeh added that the vandalism was found by EEDC patrol officers after an unexpected outage on the feeder at 02:40 a.m.

He said that the vandals took around 16 meters of subsurface 150 mm² x 3-core armoured underground cable from the feeder’s source.

As a result of this catastrophe, approximately 70 public and private transformers serving countless consumers on the feeder are currently without power.

“We sincerely regret this unprecedented development and hereby appeal to our customers for their patience and understanding as we are already working to replace the stolen/damaged items,” he said.

He promised that the electricity would be restored as soon as the repairs and replacements were completed.

Ezeh emphasised the company’s commitment to providing better service to its clients.

“EEDC remains committed to delivering improved services to her esteemed customers. The company is working diligently to resolve the issue and restore power supply to the affected areas as soon as possible,” he said.
