The Edo State Government has postponed the resuming date for all public and private schools in the Edo Central Senate District.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, stated that the postponement was until further notice to allow the state to address some pressing issues affecting the students’ wellbeing.
He added, “The new date of resumption will be duly communicated to the public in due course.
“Parents, guardians, and all education stakeholders within Edo Central Senatorial District are kindly requested to take note of this development and comply accordingly.”
The zone is facing a crisis after a peaceful protest over insecurity turned violent on Saturday.
Hoodlums attacked traders at the livestock market, killing goats and beating cows, as captured in a viral video.
They also vandalized the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, Zaiki Anthony Abumere II, which Okpebholo condemned.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, also stated that one individual was shot by a soldier and that the case had been transferred to military authorities.
The situation began on Saturday in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, with citizens protesting increased insecurity, including kidnappings and the death of a youth on Friday night.
The demonstrators blocked a major highway to demonstrate their dissatisfaction, but the demonstration was later hijacked by youths who attacked Hausa sellers at a livestock market, murdered goats, and caused chaos in the neighborhood.
