The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, on Wednesday inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation of state police and the rollout of his policing vision.

Days after the Nigeria Police Council unanimously approved his appointment and made it possible for President Bola Tinubu to swear him in at the Presidential Villa, TVC reported that Disu had his first official meeting with senior police officers since his confirmation.

The eight-person state police committee will be headed by Professor Olu Ogunsakin.

Speaking to the force’s highest leadership, the IGP emphasized that professionalism and accountability must direct behavior and operations throughout all commands nationally, stating that leadership is “not about position but about responsibility.”

He emphasized that human rights must always be respected and that authority is strongest when used responsibly.

He also stated that all Nigerians, regardless of status or history, should be treated with justice, fairness, and decency.

Additionally, Disu stated plans to improve internal control by giving the Public Complaint Unit and X-Squad more autonomy.

He claimed that decentralization will enable various governmental levels to actively participate in security.

Following a change in leadership at the top of the Nigeria Police Force, the state police implementation committee’s inauguration takes place at a crucial moment.

On February 24, 2026, President Bola Tinubu named Disu the Acting Inspector-General of Police following Kayode Egbetokun’s resignation.

Following a meeting between the president and the departing IGP at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Disu was elevated, and the Nigeria Police Council subsequently overwhelmingly approved his appointment.

At the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, he is anticipated to be formally sworn in as substantive IGP.

Disu’s appointment coincides with increased awareness of the nation’s security issues, which include an increase in kidnapping, banditry, and communal attacks.

The present administration’s state police effort is a component of larger security sector changes that decentralize policing authority to improve local responsiveness.
