The latest Yoruba Nation agitation has been described as “laughable” by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ).

The DHQ also warned that terrorists and their supporters were preparing to blackmail the military following its assault on the insurgency.

On Saturday, several Yoruba Nation agitators disguised in military camouflage stormed the Oyo State Secretariat and attempted to seize control of the State Assembly.

The agitators confronted security personnel and were apprehended, resulting in the arrest of 29 people.

On Wednesday, the suspects appeared before an Oyo State Magistrates’ Court in Iyaganku.

They were charged with seven charges, including treasonable crime, membership in an unlawful society, illegal possession of firearms, and behaviour likely to cause a breach of peace.

During a press event in Abuja on Thursday, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated that the agitation has highlighted how the insecurity afflicting many sections of the country is self-inflicted.

The DHQ’s spokesperson said, “The agitation of IPOB in the South East has proven to be for self-aggrandisement. Then, the call for a Yoruba nation is laughable. All these buttress how our security situation is self-inflicted in the country.”

He stated that carrying firearms against a legitimate government is a serious violation and that anyone who does so will face harsh consequences.

He said, “These acts are against the constitution and therefore unacceptable for persons or groups to take up arms against a constituted government. Anyone or group that contravenes this provision of the constitution is inviting severe military action and would be dealt with decisively. ”
