Nigerian rapper Erhiga Agarivbie, popularly called Erigga, has sparked debate on social media app X after commending musicians who didn’t come from wealthy families and had to work for their earnings.
Erigga, in a tweet late Tuesday, wrote on his X handle, “Shoutout to all the musicians who don’t come from family money and had to grind for every single dollar they earn.”
Reacting to the post was Afrobeats star David Adeleke, also known as Davido, who quoted the tweet and countered that musicians who come from wealthy families also deserve recognition for working their way “to the top.”
In a tweet on Wednesday night, Davido stated fiercely, “No, be we say make your pops no guard.” Shoutout to the ones that came from family money and still grind to the top.”
The ‘Omo baba olowo’ crooner later described Erigga’s tweet as “useless motivation” and referred to the rapper as an “imbecile.”
The exchange has now sparked conflicting comments on X, with approximately 35,000 postings related to the dispute.
While some commenters applauded Erigga for merely appreciating artists that have achieved success despite having a less fortunate financial background, others believed that the rapper’s tweet was a hidden hit at Davido, who comes from an affluent family.
An X user simply identified as Moses tweeted, “This tweet is so harmless. I don’t know why people are crying over it. He clearly wasn’t shading anyone, but somehow someone got offended. If you follow Erigga way back from 2020, you will know he’s all about motivation.”
Another X user, NurseVictoria01, wrote, “There’s no award or glory for suffering.
When are you ever going to act your age? Stop throwing unintelligent shade. No one stopped your ancestors or your father from securing the bag. You can chase X money without hating on the rich.”
Another X user identified as Shandymoney berated Eriga, saying, “Just mention Davido.”
Defending Davido, CrystalReignz tweeted, “Give them back-to-back; nobody has the right to discredit your effort.”
A user, HonitelHQ, noted, “You have very low self-esteem, and it is really pathetic. There is no place in that tweet where he mentioned your name. You are not the only artist in Nigeria that comes from money. The tweet isn’t even a sub, but your insecurity won’t let you ignore something that isn’t about you.
“You have a main character syndrome, too. You always want to make it about yourself. This is really a sad way to live life, man.”
For Feyitayo, he said, “Do you know how stupid you sound? The easiest way to make it in life is through inheritance (being born into a rich home). Blame it on your parents if you weren’t born rich, and not try to downplay the efforts of others because they are from a well-to-do home.”
Davido’s family wealth has been an issue for many artists who alleged that his rise to prominence in the entertainment industry is due to the Adeleke family wealth.
