Coventry City have sealed a long-awaited return to the English Premier League after a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
The result confirms the Sky Blues will finish in the top two of the EFL Championship, securing automatic promotion for the first time since their relegation in 2001.
Bobby Thomas emerged as the hero, scoring a crucial equaliser after Ryoya Morishita had given Blackburn the lead early in the second half. The point was enough to mathematically guarantee promotion.
Coventry are now unbeaten in five matches, although their recent form includes three consecutive draws. Despite that, their consistency across the campaign has proved decisive.
A key factor in the club’s resurgence has been the influence of Frank Onyeka. The Nigerian midfielder, on loan from Brentford FC, has transformed Coventry’s midfield since arriving in January. His performances helped halt a seven-game slump and injected new energy into the squad, including contributing a vital goal during the run-in.
Head coach Frank Lampard finally achieves promotion to the Premier League after previous near misses. He lost the 2019 play-off final with Derby County and suffered play-off disappointment again last season.
Lampard’s achievement is even more remarkable considering Coventry were struggling in 17th position when he took charge. He has since overseen a dramatic turnaround, guiding the club to the top of the table.
With 86 points from 43 matches, Coventry now sit first and are on course to clinch the Championship title.
