A Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in Kano on wednesday ordered the remand of a 24-year-old housewife, Hafsat Surajo, in a correctional facility for allegedly stabbing her house help, Nafiu Hafizu, 38, to death.

The defendant, who lives in Unguwa Uku Quarters in Kano, is on trial on two counts of attempted suicide and culpable homicide.

The defendant was remanded in a state jail facility by Chief Magistrate Hadiza Abdulrahman.

She postponed consideration of the petition until February 1, 2024.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Lamido Sorondinki, stated to the court that on December 20, 2023, the defendant used a sharp knife to try suicide by murdering herself, cutting herself on her left hand in the process.

“In the process, the defendant used the said sharp knife and stabbed Nafiu on his chest and other parts of his body, which led to his death.”

The defendant, however, pleaded guilty to the first charge and pleaded not guilty to the second charge.

The offense violates the provisions of Sections 281 and 221 of the Penal Code.

Meanwhile, Hafsat’s husband, Dayyabu Abdullahi, Adamu Muhammad, and Nasidi Muhammad were charged with concealing facts in the suspected murder of Nafiu before the Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendants were charged with criminal conspiracy, concealment of fact, and false information on three counts.

Sorondinki, the prosecution’s attorney, claimed that on December 20, 2023, the defendants planned with one Haruna Adamu, who is now at large, to conceal the reason for Nafiu’s death.

“The defendants misled and gave false information to the deceased’s family by saying he died as a result of pile surgery.”

The defendants both denied perpetrating the crime.

According to the prosecutor, the offense violates the provisions of Sections 97, 277, and 178 of the Penal Code.

“We have received a copy of the case diary from the police; we will study it and issue legal advice.

“My Lord, we will furnish the defense counsel with all the facilities concerning the case.”

The defendants’ defense attorneys, Rabiu Sidi and Rabiu Abdullahi, sought the court to grant bail in accordance with Section 36(5) of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution as amended and Sections 168 and 172 of the ACJL 2019 Kano State.

“All we want is justice to be done to both parties,” he said.

The court ordered the accused to be held in a detention facility and delayed the case until January 8, 2024, for further proceedings.
