R&B superstar Chris Brown has been remanded in custody after appearing in court over an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub in 2023.

The 36-year-old American artiste was arrested on Thursday at The Lowry Hotel in Salford and later charged with grievous bodily harm following the alleged assault at Tape nightclub in Mayfair.

Chris Brown, often called by his nickname Breezy, is accused of attacking music producer Abe Diaw with a bottle during the incident.

The Grammy winner had been in Manchester preparing for his upcoming UK tour, which includes performances at the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester and Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in June and July.

During the hearing at Manchester magistrates’ court, Joanne Hirst, the judge, ruled that the case was too serious for a magistrates’ court.

Hirst said the case will instead proceed to Southwark Crown Court in London, with the next hearing set for June 13.

The district judge also declined an application for bail from lawyers for Brown.

Chris Brown, dressed in a plain T-shirt and black tracksuit bottoms, had been scheduled to perform in Amsterdam on June 8, before continuing to Germany and then the UK.

Ahead of the hearing, fans gathered outside the courthouse in support of the singer.

Diaw filed a civil lawsuit against Chris Brown, seeking $16 million (£12 million) in damages for injuries and losses stemming from the incident.
