A stoppage-time strike from Rayan Cherki salvaged a 2-2 draw for Olympique Lyonnais against Manchester United in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash.

Despite the dramatic finish at Groupama Stadium, United maintained their unbeaten run in the first leg of major European knockout ties, now standing at 12 matches.

The pre-match energy was electrified by an Icelandic thunder clap echoing around the stadium, creating an intense atmosphere that United initially seemed eager to match.

Early on, Patrick Dorgu set up a golden opportunity for Rasmus Hojlund, who disappointingly dragged his shot wide from 12 yards.

Bruno Fernandes, always a threat, looked to break the deadlock with a powerful effort, but a last-ditch deflection saw his strike sail just over the crossbar.

The tension in the game was already high following some pointed pre-match words between Andre Onana and Nemanja Matic. That tension boiled over midway through the first half when Onana was left embarrassed after Thiago Almada’s dangerous free-kick delivery slipped through at the far post, despite the keeper getting a hand to it.

However, Manchester United struck back before the break through an unlikely hero. Young defender Leny Yoro diverted a volley from Manuel Ugarte into the bottom corner to level the scoreline.

Yoro almost doubled his tally shortly after the restart, pulling a shot just wide from the edge of the box. Meanwhile, Lyon’s Corentin Tolisso came close to restoring the lead but failed to beat Onana from close range.

As full-time approached, United intensified their attacking efforts. Alejandro Garnacho connected with a deep Dorgu cross, but Lucas Perri was alert to tip his volleyed effort over the bar.

Lyon’s best chance to take a lead into the second leg came via substitute Alexandre Lacazette, whose curling shot narrowly missed the target. That miss proved costly.

With time running out, Joshua Zirkzee rose highest at the far post to head in what appeared to be the winning goal for United. But Lyon weren’t finished yet.

In the dying moments, Onana spilled a shot from Georges Mikautadze, and Cherki was quick to react, slotting the ball home to seal a dramatic draw for the home side.
