The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned the public about cyber hack attempts aimed at gaining access to Nigerians’ personal accounts.
The CBN said hackers are circulating fraudulent messages and emails falsely claiming to originate from the bank.
The apex bank gave the warning in a statement signed by Hakama Sidi Ali, its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, on Tuesday.
According to the financial regulator, misleading messages are circulating that have been designed to deceive Nigerians and compromise their personal information.
The regulator said the fake communications, which include emails and online messages, often prompt recipients to click suspicious links while spreading false claims about the bank’s leadership, licensing activities, and policy decisions.
CBN added that the fraudulent content is aimed at hacking personal accounts and misleading unsuspecting members of the public.
“The official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria remains www.cbn.gov.ng. Members of the public are strongly advised to refrain from clicking links or sharing personal information on suspicious websites,” the statement reads.
“Verify the authenticity of all CBN communications through the official website and recognised media outlets.
“Report any suspected fraudulent site, email, or message to law enforcement authorities.”
CBN also said it remains committed to safeguarding the financial system.
The apex bank assured the public it is strengthening its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies to protect Nigerians from digital fraud.
On April 15, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) confirmed a cyberattack on its information systems.
A week earlier, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) launched an investigation into an alleged data breach involving Remita Payment Services Ltd., Sterling Bank, and other entities.
