Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has emerged as one of the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s breakout heroes, following a sensational performance against Spain that generated an unprecedented increase in popularity on social media.
The 40-year-old shot-stopper had slightly more than 50,000 Instagram followers before Cape Verde’s historic tournament opening against the European champions on Monday. Less than 24 hours later, the figure had risen to 6.3 million, transforming the veteran goalkeeper into a global sensation.
Vozinha was the star performer as Cape Verde held Spain to a 0-0 draw in Atlanta, earning the country’s first World Cup points.
Faced with persistent pressure from Luis de la Fuente’s team, the experienced goalkeeper made seven saves and disappointed some of the world’s top names, including replacement Lamine Yamal.
His efforts earned him Player of the Match honors, leaving the goalkeeper in tears after the final whistle.
“He was overwhelmed with emotion,” Cape Verde coach Bubista said afterward. “He has struggled throughout all these years to be here on this stage. Those were tears of resilience.”
The astonishing ascension to global fame concludes an extraordinary football odyssey.
Vozinha was born in Mindelo, Cape Verde, and turned professional at the age of 25 with local club Batuque in 2007, the same year Spain’s wonderkid Yamal was born.
Over the next two decades, he built a career that led him to Portugal, Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, and Slovakia, winning only one major trophy: the 2018-19 Cypriot Cup with AEL Limassol.
Despite spending much of his club career out of the spotlight, the goalkeeper has been a key member of Cape Verde’s national squad since 2012, helping them qualify for their first World Cup appearance.
Before the World Cup, he described the competition as “the most important moment of our lives.” Against Spain, that dream became reality.
“I have worked my whole life for this moment,” Vozinha said after being named man of the match.
“I’m 40 years old. I thought about leaving football, but I continued because of this dream. This award is for all my teammates because without them nothing would be possible.”
The emotional scenes after the final whistle were also intensely personal.
Vozinha disclosed that he thought about his late grandparents, who raised him, and his mother, who was unable to travel to the United States.
“I cried because I grew up with my grandparents, and they are no longer here,” he said. “They were everything to me. I also cried because my mum couldn’t be here because of visa issues. I would have loved for her to witness this.”
His incredible performance instantly piqued the interest of fans all around the world, with Brazilian station CazéTV encouraging viewers to follow him on Instagram. The response was instantaneous, with his following count skyrocketing from roughly 50,000 before the launch to 6.3 million at the time of publication.
Vozinha, who is now one of the tournament’s faces, will aim to extend his fairytale story when Cape Verde face Uruguay on Sunday in Miami.
After years as a football journeyman, the veteran goalie has become one of the World Cup’s most popular figures—and his extraordinary journey is far from over.
