The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will launch a new trophy on Wednesday ahead of this year’s WAFCON tournament, which will be played from July 5 to 26 in Morocco.

The football body made the announcement on Sunday, three days before the unveiling.

“The new TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Trophy will be launched on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in Morocco, the host nation for this year’s event,” CAF said in a statement.

“The new trophy is part of CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe’s vision to grow and develop women’s football in Africa.

“CAF will launch the trophy on its digital pages in the afternoon, followed by an activation event with sponsors, TotalEnergies, on the same day in the evening.”

Ahead of this year’s edition, the 12-team tournament’s prize money has been increased from $975,000 to $2,400,000.

Morocco, the hosts, is in Group A with Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while Nigeria, the 11-time winner, has been drawn against Botswana, Tunisia, and Algeria.

South Africa will defend their championship in Group C against Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania.

The tournament’s first game will be played at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium between hosts Morocco and Zambia.

Since 1998, CAF has organised the WAFCON, a biannual international women’s football competition that serves as African nations’ qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Originally a home-and-away qualification competition, it was renamed a biannual tournament in 1998 and adopted its current moniker for the 2016 edition.

Nigeria is the most successful nation in the tournament’s history, having won nine of the 12 editions and advanced to at least the semi-finals in all of them.

Equatorial Guinea won the 2008 and 2012 editions, while South Africa is the current champion, having won the 2022 edition to become the tournament’s third African winner.

Morocco, Ghana, and Cameroon are the only nations other than the previous winners to have advanced to the tournament’s final.
