Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communications, says foreign interests are fuelling the security crisis in Nigeria.

Speaking on The Link Up Podcast, organised by Echoo Room, Bwala listed factors contributing to Nigeria’s security challenges.

The presidential spokesperson said terrorism in the Sahel states, which border Nigeria, is a major factor behind the country’s security crisis.

Bwala said terrorists operating in the Sahel states attack communities in Nigeria before fleeing across the border.

“Nigeria is also a country where there are foreign interests working against the country,” he said.

“Many years ago, when Boko Haram started in Borno State, the non-governmental organisations that came for humanitarian purposes, so to speak, were renting houses for 10 to 15 years.

“How did they know they would need to stay for 10 to 15 years? What kind of projection did they make?

“On many occasions, the army has arrested Boko Haram members, and among them were foreign nationals.

“These are some of the elements that are not only fuelling the crisis, but also making it difficult to bring the crisis to an end.”

The presidential aide added that the military had declined to disclose the nationalities of foreigners arrested alongside Boko Haram members for security reasons.
