No fewer than nine persons, on Monday, narrowly escaped death when a four-storey hotel building under construction in Abuja’s Lifecamp neighborhood in the Federal Capital Territory collapsed.
Chronicle NG reports that the building, which collapsed around 4 p.m. when workers were working at the building site in the swampy Dape Area near the Berger Clinic, trapped some people beneath the debris.
Officials from the FCT Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) rushed to the collapsed structure to begin rescue efforts.
Amiola Adebayo, the FCT Fire Service’s Head of Operations stated that five people escaped when the building collapsed unexpectedly, and that four more victims trapped in the rubble were rescued and transferred to Gwarinpa General Hospital for medical treatment.
Adebayo said, “Five escaped out of the building by themselves. Four were rescued alive and taken to the Gwarinpa Hospital. There’s no certainty that anyone remains inside but operations may last for three to four days.”
At the time of filing this report, Adebayo could not confirm whether any casualties were reported in the event.
